Almost a year ago e new place opened here in town, offering real street food, with traditional flavours as well as a touch of gourmet style. This little glass cubicle is in Viale XX Settembre, and once used to be a newsstand.
The restyling they did is extraordinary: a little glass cubicle that hides nothing from curious pedestrians. They have no secrets here. And don’t expect common street food either!
I was a little fooled by the name. I thought that at “Chips Avenue” all you could eat was chips in different shapes and sizes…I COULDN’T HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG!
I was pleasantly surprised when I stopped by here with my son one day! He simply wanted to stop for the chips he had tasted here with his aunt a few months before, but I was immediatly seduced by the menu and tryed a burger… an explotion of taste!
Our stop was even nicer because Giovanni noticed a small change since last he was there: a little area with tables and chairs! Very comfortable indeed. As usuall I was very lucky: the weather was at its hottest but a pleasant breeze made it increadibly comfortable!
I was so happy to discover such a great place like this in Trieste that I immediatly called Andrea and we returned to Viale XX Settembre to take a few good photographs for you: I really wanted you to have a better look because it’s definetly worth it.
First of all I have to tell you that the menu is constantly changing because they always follow the seasons and the raw ingredients they can get daily. If their supplier doesn’t have good zucchini that morning, they’ll change the burger accordingly, with a menu that contains the best fresh ingredients! That says a lot!
At “Chis Avenue” it’s impossible to be bored.
Another strong point is their bread. Their supplier is Novak (if you’re from Trieste you’ll definetly know him), a baker that works exclusively with antique stone grinded grains, and the only one in Trieste with a wood burning oven.
The bread is light and tasty. Almost like biting into a feather; the dough is also highly digestible!
And if we’re talking about hamburger the meat is the main charachter: it has to be at its top. I tryed different types… the Prussian beef, Patanegra, buffalo veel … all incredible flavours I’d try over and over again!
If you’re vegan they also have a great selection of dishes for you, from sandwiches to finger food.
Tasty and tempting they also have traditional Trieste dishes like apricot dumplings with butter, bread crumbs and cinnamon! I’d almost say divine and … in a prêt-à-porter serving! They’re small enough to eat in one bite. Delicious!
And of course they have kipfel (potatoe dumplings) and in September they’ll have plum dumplings.
But have a look at what I selected for you!
My absolute favourite was the Patanegra hamburger with grilled apple and orange mustard (a slow-food product), served with smoked mayonaise.
Then the Prussian beef with buffalo mozzarella and grilled zucchine, and finally a dish with a burger which was half vieal and half buffalo meat, served with with salt with tea leaves smoke with beech wood.
And on the side freshly cut chips cooked on the spot, made with potates from a consortium of farmers from the region of Trentino.
Here nothing is randomly selected, the ketchup is organic and the mayonaise is super selected, and all raw ingredients are of the best quality: this is real street food turned gourmet.
But can you eat such a great burger without sipping a nice fresh beer? Of course not. And here at “Chips Avenue” you’ll also find particular beers, from a brewer in Fogliano that also farms all the necessary cereals to make the golden brew. This is another treat!
There’s not much left to do but drag your watering mouths here and try it out. I’ve told you about my personal favourites, it’s up to ou to find your own!
I was almost forgetting.
You can order and eat on the spot or choose the classic “Take away”, perfect for a snack after being at the theater or to the movies (which are both round the corner). Starting in autumn they’ll also start a home delivery service, perfect for anyone like me who has very little patience or time to cook, but loves finding everything ready!
Buon appetito!
