10 places in Friuli Venezia Giulia for a pleasant mini break 1/2

Lakes, mountains, countryside, Karst and… the beach!

This article is quite long so I’ll spit it in two parts, today you’ll read about the first five destinations…to be continued Monday!

Summer is drawing to a close? Your holidays are a far-off memory so you still feel like taking a few minibreaks?

Here are 10 places close by where you can spend a day or just few hours in the fresh air! Try it to believe me 🙂

  1. Lago Bordaglia

If you have a free weekend and you love mountain air, I suggest you put on your walking boots and heat off to discover the beautiful Lake Bordaglia, a jewel hidden in between the Carnic Alps. From Villa Santina, follow the road signs to Ovaro and Rigolato, and once you pass by Forni Avoltri head towards Pierabech and leave your car near the marble quarry.

The walk is quite long – 14 kilometres to be precise – and i twill take you about 6 hours. The paths to follow are the CAI 141 and 142. You’ll be surrounded by woods of fir trees, beech and larch trees. You’ll hear the soft trickle of streams and cross large sunny pastures until you reach the beautiful lake which reflects the surrounding mountains. Beautiful!

  1. Laghi di Fusine

A magical place, enchanted, especially in the Autumn which is the perfect season for visiting these two beautiful lakes, when the warm colours are romantically reflected in their water.

  1. Lago di Barcis

This wonderful artificial lake, created in 1954, is in the middle of the Valcellina, about 40 kilometres from Pordenone. It’s worth a visit not just for its wonderful shades of emerald green, but also to enjoy a romantic walk on the jetty. Here can you also have fun with a few water sports, away from the boiling sand of the beach!

  1. Fontanon di Goriuda, Parco delle Prealpi Giulie

Once you reach Chiusaforte, turn right towards the bridge crossing the Fella river, follow the directions towards Sella Nevea. You continue for 10 kilometres along the Raccolana Valley until you reach the farmhouse Al Laghetto where you can leave your car and continue on foot.

It’s a simple and short walk: just 15 minutes and about 100 metres up. The “Cascata del sole” (the sun’s waterfall) is beautiful; wild and strong, its water heads straight down into the Fountain of Goriuda, a name similar to Goriùz, who are dwafs that in the local legends used to live in the surrounding caves.

  1. Lago del Cornino e...i grifoni!

In the Natural reserve of Cornino, in between the areas of Forgaria nel Friuli and Tasaghis, this little Alpine lake is hidden away. It’s just 8 metres deep and 140 metres wide, it doesn’t have inflowing or outflowing streams, but water collects here because of underground water circulation. The waters are particularly clear as a consequence.

The Reserve is also home to a colony of griffons, a mythological looking animal with a wingspan of almost 3 metres, that can way up to 12 kilograms. It’s wonderful to see them fly around!
